Late last week the first ever Epic Poker tournament came to a close with David Reem taking home the title. There were a number of notables in the tournament including the second and third place finishers Erik Seidel and Jason Mercier. Notably absent was multi bracelet winner and TV poker icon Daniel Negreanu. He was shown the business plan of the newly formed Epic Poker League or EPL and decided he didn’t want to be associated with it.

In his blog that came out the day before the final table Negreanu states he refused to be a part of the new league because he didn’t think it was going to take off. He stated that Black Friday and the paralysis of the big three sites is one of the only reason anyone showed up to play. He doesn’t think the league will get enough sponsorship to be on mainstream media, attract big players or establish [...]

Last week saw the end of the first ever Epic Poker tournament at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas. Things came to a head on Friday afternoon when Dave “Chino” Rheem took out two big name pros to take home the title and a cool million dollars for his trouble. This was Reem’s biggest win since he came in 7th in the 2008 WSOP. Beating out Erik Seidel and Jason Mercier, Reem reminded the poker world that he still existed and may be in the mood for a come back.

It was an 80 hand game that gave every final table participant a nice chunk of change. Here’s the final results:

Chino Rheem-$1,000,000
Erik Seidel-$604, 330
Jason Mercier-$360,970
Hasan Habib-$237,560
Gavin Smith-$154,260
Huck Seed-$107,98

It was heads up play between a personal favorite Erik Seidel and Rheem after Seidel had knocked Mercier out of the running. In the final hand Seidel held A-Q and Rheem had A-K. The flo was beautifully laid out [...]

More and more players are turning to poker apps and software packages to keep their game honed while on the move. Here are the top (in my opinion) poker apps out on the market right now.

Zynga Texas Hold Em: The most popular poker app for the I-Phone this handy little download is super user friendly. The graphics are easy and fun and very like a regular online poker site. The app lets you import data from social networking sites and the playing tools are simple and easy to grasp. This one has been around a while and shows no signs of slowing down.

PokerLive: This one is for the Android owners and consider by poker professionals as one of the smoother apps available. Connect with your facebook account to sign up quickly and you get to play with other Android users for free. Great way to get in some practice.

Apple Texas Hold ‘em: It’s great when [...]

Omaha poker was quite the game of choice at this year’s 2011 WSOP and for many newbees to the world of poker Omaha sounds a little intimidating. Its silly to be intimidated by poker variants because that’s all there are: variants, different ways of playing the same game. Its the few slight differences that make things interesting.

The first difference between Omaha and Hold’em is everyone is dealt four cards rather than two. After pre-flop bets there is a three card community card flop, another round of betting, a turn card, final bets and the river. Besides the number of cards you start off with, Omaha is pretty much the same as Hold em.’ Panic over.

There are several variants of Omaha poker that can make a difference to the betting rules. There is PLO Omaha or pot limit Omaha that means you can bet the minimum amount up to the value of the entire pot. [...]

Okay so these days playing poker online for money is pretty much uncool but that hasn’t stopped many folks from playing online to improve their game and take advantage of free roll offers. All online players have to have an avatar or nickname and image to represent them in the virtual world. Does the type, gender and name of your avatar make a difference to your poker play?

Personally when I enter a virtual casino and see myself surrounded by mythical creatures, 1920s gangsters and rabbits with crowns on their heads I have to roll my eyes. How long did it take you to decide on such an avatar? Does it make me underestimate you as a player because I find your choice a little ridiculous?

I spend a large portion of my time staring at those fanciful avatars and reading those silly screen names and I can’t say it does my poker game any good. I [...]

If you have been keeping up with the poker news you’ll know that Senator Lesniak of New Jersey got both the house and the senate in his state to approve an intrastate online gaming law. The legislation was vetoed by conservative state governor Christie. In a recent letter to the federal government, a response to a letter by Harry Reid regarding federal policies towards state gambling, Lesniak points out to everyone that what New Jersey does it up to New Jersey because there is no law that says internet poker for money is illegal.

We all know that there has been several attempts to create a federal online gaming law as well as attempts by individual states to pass their own intrastate gambling laws. Proposed legislation seems to fail because of the assumption that online gaming and online poker violates the Wire Act. But as Lesniak points out in his open letter to the feds, the [...]

Poker fans and players alike are fans of statistics. Stats let us know who is on top who has lost their glory and what rising stars are out there. Now the folks over at Federated Sports have created an online up to date database that tracks real time scores of the top 300 players in the world. Concentrating on live tournament results, the database will be called the Global Poker Index or GPI.

The GPI website is already up and running and this week’s top ten players are posted on the homepage. Jason Mercier is ranked number one in the world with a score of 2459.89. Vanessa Selbst brings up the rear at number ten with a score of 2011.05. The scores or ratings take into account a number of different factors. These include the field size, the finishing place as well as the buy in for each tournament over the last 36 month period.

Here’s the [...]
