Bosom Buddies All Over Again?
Are we experiencing bosom buddies all over again? I’m sure you remember that television show from the 1980’s that starred Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari. The two men lived in a woman’s apartment complex and had to dress as women to not get caught and get thrown out of their residence, which has almost dirt cheap rent. So, what does this have to do with poker? It does not have anything to do with poker directly but a story out of the World Series of Poker makes one think back to the show Bosom Buddies.
A student from the University of California-Davis won a poker tournament at Harvey’s Lake Tahoe Casino/Hotel this past Saturday in an event that was on a circuit of events associated with the World Series of Poker. The tournament was supposed to be a women’s tournament but the student, 22-year-old Greg Sessler, won almost $10,000 with a winning hand of, ironically, a pair of queens.
The World Series of Poker released the following statement about the tournament: “The WSOP isn’t a political organization and can’t be expected to get involved in debates about sexism, discrimination, or other polarizing issues which may be applicable to poker tournaments. While the WSOP makes a sincere effort to promote women in poker and offers quasi-exclusive tournaments designed to increase female participation in the game, officials generally do not turn away those who want to play in the event, based solely on gender.”
It cost $300 to enter this tournament, with 96 players entering, four of them males. Sessler was the only player to reach the money, which is the top nine.
