Poker Takes an Ugly Turn in NBA
A game of high stakes poker took an ugly turn on an NBA team airplane and then again in an NBA locker room. The team in question during this dispute is the Washington Wizards. The two players involved in this dispute are Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton. The high stakes poker game began when the team was in Phoenix and continued on the chartered plane ride back to the District of Columbia, where the team makes its home. The dispute then carried over into the Wizards locker room when Arenas walked in with three guns.
Arenas placed the three guns on the chair outside of Crittenton’s locker in an attempt to intimidate the 22 year old player. Crittenton had a gambling debt owed to Arenas of $25,000 from the game that began in Phoenix and continued on the plane ride home. Crittenton was told by Arenas to choose a gun but he responded to Arenas telling him that he already had his own gun. The next thing that happened was the two players drew guns on each other but no shots were fired and no punches were thrown during the incident in the Wizards’ locker room.
The NBA and the federal government are investigating the incident for more than one reason; the use of guns as a threat in a major sports venue and gambling among athletes on a team plane and in the team locker room. Both players could face lengthy suspensions by the team and the league as well as fines and maybe even jail time depending on the outcome of the government’s investigation.
