The SugarHouse Casino
The city of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania is working on a proposed casino to be built along the Delaware River and it will be called the SugarHouse Casino. The proposed casino was one of five awarded a gaming license on December 20, 2006 by the Pennsylvania Gaming Board Control. The development of the casino has been protested by hundreds of residents in the area who are worried about too much traffic and too many people being in the area. The casino’s submerged lands license was revoked by Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter in April of 2008.
The Supreme Court has since ruled that their permits are legal, meaning that the casino can be built on the former property of the Jack Frost Sugar Refinery. The first phase of construction will include a state of the art casino floor with 3,o00 slot machines, dining and retail outlets, and a 3,000 car parking garage that will be free to customers. Other phases will include a health spa, more dining and retail outlets, and an event center such as the Pennsylvania Convention Center but not as large.
A recent news report out of Philadelphia discussed an archaeological dig that is taking place on the site of the casino yet to be built. The dig has discovered various items from 18th century brick privies. Thousands of relics have been found during the dig that were left behind by people who lived along the Delaware River some 3,500 years ago. This discovery is the largest of any kind of Native American artifacts in the city of Philadelphia. The dig will hopefully also discover the presence of a British fort once thought to be in the area.
